PROJECT 1:
DESIGNER'S JOURNEY:
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
TASK
In this assignment, students were to produce an A5 accordion booklet. The content will consist of elaborations and explanations on the design elements observed from black and white photographs, photograph by ourselves. Other than that students were also required to produce one A3 sheet of analysis from the painting Guernica.
MY REFLECTION
WEEK 1: CHOOSING PICTURES
For the first tutorial class, I went around my house taking pictures of natural elements. Later that week, I went out and took pictures of manmade elements.
WEEK 2: PLANNING MY PAGES
I then did some research for inspiration on Pinterest. I planned out the composition and layout of my pages before starting to get an overview of how my accordion book would look like.
sketching and drafting the composition and listing down the contents.
WEEK 3: DOCUMENTATION
I later find out that the pages take more time than expected. I am able to finish at most 2 pages per day.
WEEK 4: DOCUMENTATION
The documentation and drawing process took two weeks to complete. I used a wide range of mediums stretching from pencil sketch, pen sketch, charcoal to collages.
WEEK 5: GUERNICA + PRINTING
The Guernica analysis and documentation page took about 3 days to complete. After that, I proceeded to print out all the pictures and the Guernica painting in the best quality by going to a printing shop.
WEEK 6: BINDING + COVER
As for the last week, I finished up the assignment by binding the accordion book pages together and designing a cover for it. With cloth, I made another outer cover so that the book doesn't open up easily. For Guernica, I stuck the pages onto cardboard to give it more solidness.
REFLECTION
1. LIFELONG LEARNING
By the end of the assignment, I realize that I got better at layout and composition. A good layout for a page contributes to the overall neatness and gives character to a piece of work.
2. THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
After obtaining feedback from Mr Choy, I identify what is lacking and refined it into better versions.
MY REFLECTION
3. INTRAPERSONAL SKILLS
Knowing that it will take me 1 day to finish 2 pages, I planned ahead to estimate when I can finish the project. I spent the remaining time retouching.
