PROJECT 1:
DESIGNER'S JOURNEY:
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
TASK
In this assignment, students were to produce an A5 accordion booklet. The content will consist of elaborations and explanations on the design elements observed from black and white photographs, photograph by ourselves. Other than that students were also required to produce one A3 sheet of analysis from the painting Guernica.
MY REFLECTION
WEEK 9: RESEARCH + LAYOUT + COVER PAGE + MACRO STUDY
I started the assignment by doing in-depth research about my hometown. I jotted down all the information in my notebook and started working on the layout of my pamphlet.

After all the information had been gathered, I started designing the cover page of my hometown. I named my pamphlet "MY PICTURESQUE HOMETOWN" because I was inspired by all the wonderful pictures and photos of the place.

I then did three pages for macro study, including information on the history, key plan, location plan, landmarks and accesibility.
WEEK 10: MAPS + TANGIBLE COMPONENTS
The maps were definitely the most challanging part. To ensure the proportions are right, I printed out the map from google maps and traced on it. It took longer than expected. It had a unique design for the zoning map, to zone out buildings on different plastic sheets so that you can flip, hence the process took longer than expected to complete.
For the softscapes, my first try was to just identify and draw out the plant species. After knowing that we had to also zone out the softscapes on the map, I have no choice but to redo for the best.
For circulation, I had to redo after knowing that I have to write down the names of the main roads, and my map was too small to do that.
WEEK 11: INTANGIBLE COMPONENTS + FAVOURITE COMPONENT + CONCLUSION
For the third week, I continued with the pages for "Sence of Place", culture and activity, favourite/sentimental component as well as conclusion.
WEEK 12: BACK COVER + REDO + STICKING THE PAMPHLET TOGETHER + FILMING
For the last week, I finished up all the pages, including the ones that I wanted to redo. Then, I stuck the pages together and filmed a video of me flipping through it.
REFLECTION
1. LIFELONG LEARNING
By the end of the assignment, I felt myself getting better at doing research, analysis and extracting useful information from various sites. The residents in my hometown are mostly Chinese, so all the useful data and statistics are all in Chinese. I had to not only filter out relevant facts but also to further translate and paraphrase them into English sentences.
2. THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
When I realized I had to redo it, I put a lot of thought into making it better but still fitting the flow of the content. At first, I realize I do not have enough space to fit in all the information that I got, but at last I solved the issue by using an extra paper flap.
MY REFLECTION
3. INTRAPERSONAL SKILLS
One of the most challenging parts of this assignment is the immense amount of workload we have to complete in the span of 4 weeks. At first it seemed overwhelming, however with the aid of a properly planned timetable, I was able to finish up everything with a few days to spare.
